    Abstract In this paper, a methodology has been proposed to decrease the solution time of the joint energy-reserve market clearing problem under Payment Cost Minimization (PCM) mechanism. PCM mechanism is recently proposed to replace the available economically-inefficient clearing mechanisms in electricity markets. While the exact methods have been successfully applied to solve the market clearing problem under available mechanisms, their computational efficiency is poor when applied to solve this problem under PCM mechanism due to special characteristics of PCM formulation. The proposed solution methodology uses linear programming along with Mixed Integer Genetic Algorithm (MIGA) to minimize the payment cost. Most of efforts are focused on speeding up the applied optimization technique, since the available frameworks for solving the PCM problem suffer from very slow convergence. Different custom-designed functions have been added to the basic MIGA to decrease the solution time. The results are compared to those obtained using branch and cut technique.

    With the introduction of new concepts in operation and planning of power systems, decision making is becoming more critical than ever before. These concepts include restructuring, smart grids, and the importance of environmental concerns. The art of decision making is defined as choosing the best action among available choices considering the constraints and input data of the problem. Decision making is usually a complex task which becomes more sophisticated when the input data of the problem are subject to uncertainty. This chapter presents a critical review of the state-of-the-art uncertainty in handling tools for renewable energy studies. Different uncertainty modeling tools are first introduced and then the appropriate ones for renewable energies are identified. Then, each method is implemented on a simple two-bus case study.

    This paper poses the question: ‘can energy innovation initiatives in Innovation Playgrounds foster a new ‘energy urbanity’ through active citizen participation in the energy transition?’ The concept of ‘Innovation Playgrounds’ and an accompanying Framework are described and linked to implementation evidence of the EU H2020 positive energy research and innovation project +CityxChange, related to emergent active citizen participation in two cities: Limerick, Ireland and Trondheim, Norway. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate that spatially clustered energy innovation initiatives in urban areas involving active citizen participation contribute to a new ‘energy urbanity’ for the energy transition. The research methods are based on a comparative case study approach and close observation of two case sites, with a focus on the ‘Innovation Playground’ area of each city. The article’s three main conclusions are: that a Framework approach to active citizen participation in energy innovation initiatives in urban areas facilitates new models of active citizen and community participation around energy innovation; emergent active citizen participation in energy innovation initiatives in urban areas suggests a new type of engagement that is information-rich, blended, action-led, citizen-focused, and spatial; and that a new paradigm of ‘energy urbanity’ for the energy transition can be proposed.     The increasing demand for cleaner combustion and reduced greenhouse gas emissions motivates research on the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels and their surrogates. Accurate detailed chemical kinetic models are an important prerequisite for high fidelity reacting flow simulations capable of improving combustor design and operation. The development of such models for many new fuel components and/or surrogate molecules is greatly facilitated by the application of reaction classes and rate rules. Accurate and versatile rate rules are desirable to improve the predictive accuracy of kinetic models. A major contribution in the literature is the recent work by Bugler et al. (2015), which has significantly improved rate rules and thermochemical parameters used in kinetic modeling of alkanes. In the present study, it is demonstrated that rate rules can be used and consistently optimized for a set of normal alkanes including n-heptane, n-octane, n-nonane, n-decane, and n-undecane, thereby improving the predictive accuracy for all the considered fuels. A Bayesian framework is applied in the calibration of the rate rules. The optimized rate rules are subsequently applied to generate a mechanism for n-dodecane, which was not part of the training set for the optimized rate rules. The developed mechanism shows accurate predictions compared with published well-validated mechanisms for a wide range of conditions. (C) 2016 The Combustion Institute. Published by Elsevier Inc.     This paper describes the effect of molten metal behavior on melting process and spiking phenomenon in electron beam welding. X-rays generated as a consequence of beam-metal interaction were detected at specific sites of 3 mm in length along penetration to clarify the melting process for various beam focussing conditions and welding speeds. Behavior of molten metal flow was also observed using high speed cinecamera simultaniously. JIS SM 50 A steel, Fe-10% Mn alloy and Fe-20% Mn alloy were used as base metals to investigate the effect of vapor pressure on melting process.Results obtained were as follows.(1) Spiking phenomenon was caused by an intermittent melting of base metal depending on the fluctuation in morphology of beam cavity.(2) Spiking was suppressed with an increase in Mn content involved in the base metal, since the beam cavity was stable and always clear of molten metal during welding by high pressure Mn vapor.(3) The front wall of the beam cavity was melted almost continuously for upper focussing condition, whereas it was melted intermittently for down focussing condition due to the periodical flow of the molten metal, resulting in more probable occurrence of acute spiking.(4) Spiking was more likely to occur with a decrease in the welding speed under the same penetration depth, since the electron beam could drill the bottom deeply for low welding speed.(5) The periodical flow was caused by natural vibration of the molten metal or high voltage power ripple depending on the amount of the molten metal around the beam cavity.

    The Diesel Engine, invented by the German engineer Rudolf Diesel, was a marvelous creation that changed the way the automobile industry worked. It is an internal combustion engine that compresses air to elevate its pressure and temperature so high that the atomized diesel fuel undergoes combustion almost instantaneously when it is sprayed into the combustion chamber. The Major advantage of a Compression Ignition (CI) engine compared to a Spark Ignition (SI) engine is the higher compression ratio achieved in the former, making it more efficient. This makes diesel engines more suitable for heavy-duty vehicles, which require more torque to overcome rough terrain.

    Solar and wind energy technologies, due to their nature of weather dependency, have been recognized as not the complete solution for the renewable energy transition. Creating a solution for the short fall is empirical if we are to remove the dependency on fossil fuels and reach net zero targets. The production of hydrogen, biogas and other gases can be produced sustainably, which can also allow for the utilization of waste materials or the ability to store energy and allow a greater positive impact on our environment. However, production of these gases is not always as transparent or environmentally friendly as perceived, so with the aid of certification and blockchain, we can create a system that can guarantee their environmentally positive origin, and ultimately help assist the transition to a greener future. This paper explores the varying production methods, with consideration to their environmental impact, and the implications of the use of certificates and blockchain to monitor production, trade and usage.

    Rachel Carson’s 1962 book The Silent Spring, perhaps the most influential work of environmental advocacy ever written, opens with a ‘Fable for Tomorrow’.1 She depicts a town completely at one with its pastoral surroundings: Even in winter the roadsides were places of beauty where countless birds came to feed on the berries and on the seed heads of the dried weeds rising above the snow.     The penetration of renewable energy resources into electric power networks has been increased considerably to reduce the dependence of conventional energy resources, reducing the generation cost and greenhouse emissions. The wind and photovoltaic (PV) based systems are the most applied technologies in electrical systems compared to other technologies of renewable energy resources. However, there are some complications and challenges to incorporating these resources due to their stochastic nature, intermittency, and variability of output powers. Therefore, solving the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem with considering the uncertainties of renewable energy resources is a challenging task. Application of the Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA) for solving complex multimodal and non-linear problems such as ORPD under system uncertainties may cause entrapment into local optima and suffer from stagnation. The aim of this paper is to solve the ORPD problem under deterministic and probabilistic states of the system using an improved marine predator algorithm (IMPA). The IMPA is based on enhancing the exploitation phase of the conventional MPA. The proposed enhancement is based on updating the locations of the populations in spiral orientation around the sorted populations in the first iteration process, while in the final stage, the locations of the populations are updated their locations in adaptive steps closed to the best population only. The scenario-based approach is utilized for uncertainties representation where a set of scenarios are generated with the combination of uncertainties the load demands and power of the renewable resources. The proposed algorithm is validated and tested on the IEEE 30-bus system as well as the captured results are compared with those outcomes from the state-of-the-art algorithms. A computational study shows the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the other reported algorithms.

    Abstract In this paper, a methodology has been proposed to decrease the solution time of the joint energy-reserve market clearing problem under Payment Cost Minimization (PCM) mechanism. PCM mechanism is recently proposed to replace the available economically-inefficient clearing mechanisms in electricity markets. While the exact methods have been successfully applied to solve the market clearing problem under available mechanisms, their computational efficiency is poor when applied to solve this problem under PCM mechanism due to special characteristics of PCM formulation. The proposed solution methodology uses linear programming along with Mixed Integer Genetic Algorithm (MIGA) to minimize the payment cost. Most of efforts are focused on speeding up the applied optimization technique, since the available frameworks for solving the PCM problem suffer from very slow convergence. Different custom-designed functions have been added to the basic MIGA to decrease the solution time. The results are compared to those obtained using branch and cut technique.

    With the introduction of new concepts in operation and planning of power systems, decision making is becoming more critical than ever before. These concepts include restructuring, smart grids, and the importance of environmental concerns. The art of decision making is defined as choosing the best action among available choices considering the constraints and input data of the problem. Decision making is usually a complex task which becomes more sophisticated when the input data of the problem are subject to uncertainty. This chapter presents a critical review of the state-of-the-art uncertainty in handling tools for renewable energy studies. Different uncertainty modeling tools are first introduced and then the appropriate ones for renewable energies are identified. Then, each method is implemented on a simple two-bus case study.

    This paper poses the question: ‘can energy innovation initiatives in Innovation Playgrounds foster a new ‘energy urbanity’ through active citizen participation in the energy transition?’ The concept of ‘Innovation Playgrounds’ and an accompanying Framework are described and linked to implementation evidence of the EU H2020 positive energy research and innovation project +CityxChange, related to emergent active citizen participation in two cities: Limerick, Ireland and Trondheim, Norway. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate that spatially clustered energy innovation initiatives in urban areas involving active citizen participation contribute to a new ‘energy urbanity’ for the energy transition. The research methods are based on a comparative case study approach and close observation of two case sites, with a focus on the ‘Innovation Playground’ area of each city. The article’s three main conclusions are: that a Framework approach to active citizen participation in energy innovation initiatives in urban areas facilitates new models of active citizen and community participation around energy innovation; emergent active citizen participation in energy innovation initiatives in urban areas suggests a new type of engagement that is information-rich, blended, action-led, citizen-focused, and spatial; and that a new paradigm of ‘energy urbanity’ for the energy transition can be proposed.
